OPENING | Thursday. April 5th | 7-9PM

surface screen.jpg

Please join me this Thursday night for surface | screen an exhibition by Stuart J. Gibson + John Richey at Spaceworks. This collection of process-driven fine art prints take as their impetus a set of unique artistic engagements with ‘the everyday’ as each artist teases out a creative conversation about facade, artifice, light, and illusions to the natural world.

Each series is a contemplation on liminal space. Gibson’s abstract silkscreen prints with monotype and hand painted elements call attention to the skin that lies between the sea and the sky, while Richey’s lush and ethereal cyanotypes are meditations on the woven mesh that separates indoor spaces from the world outside. Together these anthologies of grainy smears and smudges tell a story of how we mediate the world around us through and with surfaces and screens.

MASS/MATTER at 77 Grove

Saturday. April 7th | 6-9PM

mass matter.jpg

Join me in Rutland, Vermont this weekend for MASS/MATTER at 77 Gallery. This intimate group exhibition at the new 77 Art Rutland Vermont Art Center presents new work by 8 alumni of the Spring/Summer 2016 Studios at MASS MoCA residency.

Works vary in their literal and metaphorical masses. Some seem to have their own gravity, pulling viewers toward them, while others appear more ephemeral and weightless. Working away from home for an extended period of time required that each artist to realize the staples of their practice, in turn working with less. We cut, molded, burnt, ground, and distorted materials until our desires emerged and became palpable.

Participating Artist:
Karen Y. Chan, Suzy González, Yorgos Maraziotis, Tim McCool, Amalya Meira, Jeremy Olson, Whitney Ramage, John Richey

Original, small art works - conceived as Valentines - by dozens of local, emerging artists will be available for sale. Each will be priced at $75 with $25 from each sale supporting hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico and St. John: two Caribbean-American territories that share a fraught history in the sugar industry and are oft synonymous with sunny escapes.
