FAR AWAY INTERACTION at Spaceworks Gallery
OPENING | Fri. November 16th | 7-9PM

far away interaction.jpg

Far Away Interaction is a two-person exhibition of new work by Kim Manchester (Portland OR) and me at Spaceworks Gallery. This cross-continental collaboration has allowed each artist to produce a new series of cyanotype-based work through a process of layering found imagery.

Manchester’s work draws from her background in photography, printmaking and research into historic textile traditions. Through a process of layering she builds works that explore the beauty of imperfection that often accompany handmade objects. The instructionally-informed, cumulative, and organized construction techniques used are in direct contrast with the intricate hand printed final images. The resulting works comment on the unique qualities of interaction between materials, liquids, chemistry and light.

Richey’s large-scale cyanotype work on salvaged fabric remnants explores the aggressive nature of masculine textile objects through the use of scavenged industrial materials like metal chain-link fencing, barbed wire, and jagged wooden planks. The themes embodied by each work are in stark contrast with the soothing blue hues of the cyanotype process and the lightweight textiles they’re printed on.

Join us on Friday, November 16th between 7-9PM for an opening reception for the artists!

AllowMe+To+ReintroduceMyself.jpg

Join me Thursday, June 21st at the New Cigar Factory LIC for Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself, an expansive group exhibition curated by the phenomenally talented Krista Scenna and Carolina Peñafiel

Cigar manufacturing was a dominant industry in New York City from the late 19th century into the early 20th century.  Established in 1896, The DeNobili Cigar Factory in Long Island City operated for decades, employing thousands of local makers to roll and pack the tabacco by hand until the factory moved operations outside of New York City in 1960. In 2017, the former industrial hub was repurposed to a modern, mixed-use creative space.

Independent Curators, Krista Scenna, of Brooklyn’s Ground Floor Gallery and Carolina Peñafiel, of Local Project in Queens, are thrilled to welcome the historic Cigar Factory back to Long Island City with a new generation of makers: New York City’s talented emerging artists!

A group exhibition featuring dozens of local, contemporary artists, the exhibition pays homage to the Cigar Factory’s past as a thriving network of local makers by inviting New York City’s living artists – the current generation of makers – to show original, new works on paper in all media. We want to see your collages, drawings, sculpture, and installation including sound pieces.  Other ideas and proposals are welcome! The facilities are big enough for your big, off-the-cuff ideas and the curators are looking for exciting new work by emerging artists nurtured by the five boroughs.

surface screen.jpg

Please join me this Thursday night for surface | screen an exhibition by Stuart J. Gibson + John Richey at Spaceworks. This collection of process-driven fine art prints take as their impetus a set of unique artistic engagements with ‘the everyday’ as each artist teases out a creative conversation about facade, artifice, light, and illusions to the natural world.

Each series is a contemplation on liminal space. Gibson’s abstract silkscreen prints with monotype and hand painted elements call attention to the skin that lies between the sea and the sky, while Richey’s lush and ethereal cyanotypes are meditations on the woven mesh that separates indoor spaces from the world outside. Together these anthologies of grainy smears and smudges tell a story of how we mediate the world around us through and with surfaces and screens.

mass matter.jpg

Join me in Rutland, Vermont this weekend for MASS/MATTER at 77 Gallery. This intimate group exhibition at the new 77 Art Rutland Vermont Art Center presents new work by 8 alumni of the Spring/Summer 2016 Studios at MASS MoCA residency.

Works vary in their literal and metaphorical masses. Some seem to have their own gravity, pulling viewers toward them, while others appear more ephemeral and weightless. Working away from home for an extended period of time required that each artist to realize the staples of their practice, in turn working with less. We cut, molded, burnt, ground, and distorted materials until our desires emerged and became palpable.
